Woman Critical Following East-End Fire

An elderly woman is fighting for life after fire broke out at a supportive housing facility in east London.

London firefighters, police, and paramedics were called to Maple Village Residence, a 45-unit wheelchair accessible facility on Hamilton Rd., near Hyla St., just after noon on Wednesday.

"There was heavy smoke on the top floor and one woman was trapped," said Platoon Chief Lewis Carter. "The first two incoming crews went through the smoke, found the victim , and brought her outside. She was unconscious when we handed her to paramedics."

The unidentified woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition. She was alone inside the upper unit, she shares will her husband, at the time of the fire.

The facility was evacuated as a precaution. The residents were put on a city bus to keep warm while firefighters extinguished the blaze. They have since been temporarily moved to another facility on Queens Ave.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire and estimate damage to be over $100,000.
