Cenotaph Typo Corrected

An embarrassing blunder on London's newly renovated cenotaph in Victoria Park has been repaired.

The typo, which listed the dates of Canada's mission to Afghanistan as 2010 to 2014 instead of 2001 to 2014, was fixed last Friday.

"We are very pleased with the repair and we are hoping the cenotaph will last another 70 to 80 years before we have to do any more repairs on it," said Tim Wellhauser, facilities manager with the City of London.

The mistake was discovered during a review of the renovated structure last month.

"The original design drawings had the correct date on them. Those design drawings were signed off by a number of people that checked it. When the design drawings were given back to the consultant, the consultant made the error at the time of the contract documents," said Wellhauser. "Nobody picked it up until it was obviously too late - when it was done."

The exact cost to fix the typo isn't known as it is being paid for by the consultant.

Restoration of the 83-year-old monument, which took several months to complete, saw the addition of the dates of the Korean and Afghanistan conflicts carved into the structure. It was meant as a way of commemorating area soldiers who lost their lives during the conflicts.

The federal government kicked in $158,242 from the Canada 150 program toward the $475,200 repair costs.

A re-dedication ceremony for the newly renovated landmark is planned for 11:30am on September 17.
