Flooding Possible Due To Heavy Rain

Some parks and roads in the London-area may soon resemble ponds and streams.

A flood watch was issued for the area on Thursday by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) as rain is expected to last into the weekend.

UTRCA officials have said, with the ground already saturated from a wet April and rainy start to May, the watershed will respond quickly to the rain that is forecast to fall over the next two days. Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for London with 40 mm to 70 mm of rain expected.

Rain earlier in the week elevated water levels in rivers, ponds, streams, and ditches increasing the likelihood of flooding.

The severity of any flooding will depend on the overall rainfall amount, but low-lying areas such as Harris Park in London are sure to be inundated with water, according to the UTRCA.

Should the region be on the receiving end of the highest amount of rainfall forecast, flooding could force the closure of roads including Windermere Ave. in London and Hwy. 2 in Woodstock. Parking areas on the Western University campus could also be affected.

Londoners are being urged to use extreme caution near all waterways as banks are slippery and the water is very cold and fast moving.

The wet weather will continue across the region until Monday when sunshine returns with a high of 9 C.
