Dozens Cited for Speeding in Good Friday Blitz

A Good Friday enforcement blitz by the Ontario Provincial Police has resulted in numerous tickets issued.

In separate operations, Middlesex OPP officers conducted speed enforcement all day Friday on Hwy 401 at Elgin Rd, and Friday afternoon on Hwy 402 at Glendon Dr in Strathroy.

53 drivers were charged with speeding in the Hwy 401 blitz and 15 on Hwy 402 for a total of 68 tickets, all for traveling 129 km per hour or more in a 100 km per hour zone.

On the 401, two drivers were charged with exceeding the speed limit by 50km or more, or racing a motor vehicle.  One of the drivers was a 22-year-old woman with a toddler strapped in the back seat.  Both the drivers' vehicles were seized and impounded and their licences suspended for seven days.

On the 402, three drivers were ticketed for talking on their cell phones or texting while driving.  Two of the drivers were in commercial vehicles when they were stopped.

The OPP says speeding and aggressive driving are the leading causes of collisions and fatalities on roads they patrol, with speeding often leading to behaviour such as tailgating and unsafe lane changing.
