4-Year-Old Saved By Child Seat

Provincial police in Elgin County say a 4-year-old child escaped a serious crash unharmed, largely because the child was in a properly installed child safety seat.

Elgin OPP say the Dodge Caliber the child was riding in was rear-ended by a pickup truck as it was stopped behind another vehicle that was waiting to turn left.

The collision happened on Talbot Line between Hacienda Rd. and Springfield Rd. on Tuesday afternoon around 3:40pm.

Police say the pickup was heading east on Talbot Line when it hit the Caliber from behind.

The pickup driver suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Caliber and the child were assessed by ambulance attendants at the scene and were not taken to hospital.

“This is a perfect example of a collision that could have been fatal," said Elgin County OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Brad Fishleigh. "It was good to see everyone used their safety equipment properly and injuries were minor. Seat belts do save lives and all three people involved were able to go home at the end of the day.”

The driver of the pickup, a 43-year-old Aylmer man, is charged with careless driving.
