London Company Fined After Worker Injured

A London company that sells and services construction equipment is facing a hefty fine after a worker was seriously injured.

The Ministry of Labour says Toromont Industries Ltd. has been fined $115,000 after a worker's hand became trapped between a concrete floor and a 4,900 lb drive assembly, that fell from its support stands.

The ministry says the drive assembly had been placed on three support stands, but was not solidly secured after part of the drive unit was removed. The change in weight distribution caused the drive assembly to become unstable and fall.

Toromont Industries Ltd., which is located at at 50 Enterprise Dr., has pleaded guilty to failing requirements detailed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

In addition to the fine issued on Thursday, the company is also facing a 25% victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
