Water Levels On The Rise From Mid-Winter Thaw, Rain

Mild weather coupled with rain has water levels in area streams, rivers, and ditches on the rise.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) said Tuesday that the region has received 2-10 mm across the watershed since Monday evening, with the higher amounts measured north of Hwy. 7.

"We remind everyone to be very cautious near watercourses, and to keep children and pets away. Any ice cover is unstable and thin, streambanks are slippery and the water is very cold," said Mark Shifflett, UTRCA senior water resources engineer.

Another 10mm of rain is forecast to fall in the London-area Tuesday with temperatures expected to reach 6 C. UTRCA officials said waters will peak early Wednesday and remain elevated for the rest of the week.

Flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas are at seasonal levels.
