Lawson Among Top Ten National Research Facilities

For the third year in a row, Lawson Health Research Institute has been named one of the country's top ten research facilities.

The London-based institute placed eighth on the 2016 edition of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals List by Research Infosource.

“We are up there with some of the largest and most successful research hospitals in Canada," said Dr. David Hill, scientific director at Lawson. "Despite increased competition for research dollars, the ranking tells us that Lawson and our two partner hospitals continue to be a major part of Canada’s academic hospital-based research.”

The ranking of top 40 research facilities was based on several factors, including total research income from the previous fiscal year. Lawson brought in nearly $115.9-million in research dollars in 2015, a 2.2% increase over the previous year.

Lawson is the research institute of St. Joseph's Health Care London and the London Health Sciences Centre. As such, Dr. Hill says Londoners are the first to benefit from its new medical breakthroughs.

Over the last year, Lawson researchers have developed technology to provide personalized treatment for tremors, found a new treatment strategy benefiting patients waiting for liver transplants, and created the first clinical guidelines in Canada for pain following spinal cord injury.

University Health Network in Toronto topped the annual list.
