Police Warn Of New "Sympathy Scam"

A new scam that pulls at the heartstrings has surfaced in south London.

London police received two calls approximately one week apart about a woman approaching strangers in the area of Wellington Rd. and Commissioners Rd. E regarding a vehicle break-in. In both cases the woman claimed she was from Tennessee and had her vehicle broken into when she stopped for something to eat.

Police say the woman then asks for money.

She is described as white, approximately 45 to 55 years-old, operating a black 4-door car with damage to the rear passenger side door, and the back window missing. The vehicle had Tennessee licence plates, but the plate number is unknown.

Police say the scam is similar to another in which an individual says they locked their keys in their vehicle and need money for a tow truck.

Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
