Port Stanley Beach Named One Of Canada's Most Beautiful

Port Stanley Beach is being recognized by a national magazine as one of the country's most beautiful beaches.

NUVO magazine gave the distinction to only 22 Canadian beaches and the Lake Erie beach was one of only two to be selected in Ontario. Canatara Beach in Sarnia also made the national list.

The quarterly lifestyle magazine chose Port Stanley Beach because of its "gradual, sandy drop off, warm water, and picture-perfect shorelines."

Central Elgin Mayor David Marr says he wasn't surprised the beach caught the eye of a national publication.

"We are one of the Blue Flag beaches," says Marr. "Up until this year we were the only one on the north shore of Lake Erie that had a Blue Flag designation. It's something we work hard at."

Port Stanley beach has earned the prestigious eco-certification for the past seven years in a row. The world-renowned Blue Flag indicates the beach meets high safety, water quality, and environmental standards.

Marr says re-development of Port Stanley harbour and the waterfront has been a real draw with large crowds flocking to the area seven days a week.

"Our breakwater is open as of last September and that's drawing a lot of people," says Marr. "We hope within the next year the new Hofhuis Park, which is a green space right beside the beach, will also be open."
