Dozens Of Charges Laid During Distracted Driving Campaign

The first week of a summer-long distracted driving campaign by Woodstock police proved to be a busy one with nearly 100 charges laid.

#putdownthephone, a joint initiative between Woodstock police and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, saw 91 drivers charged between June 27 and July 3.

Police say 12 drivers were charged with distracted driving, 57 were hit with speeding infractions, two regarding a parking bylaw, two for other provincial offences and 18 for unspecified highway traffic act offences.

Officers also checked 700 vehicles through a RIDE program. Only one person was issued a three day licence suspension for registering an alert when after giving a breath sample.

Through the initiative residents will see an increased police presence on city streets all summer long, specifically over the days leading into the July, August and September 2016 long weekends.

Police are asking motorists to slow down and to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.
