By the end of the month, the London Health Sciences Centre will be a completely smoke-free facility.
The move, which takes effect June 30, is in compliance with recent changes to the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.
Under the new rules, smoking anywhere on hospital properties including buildings, grounds and parking lots is prohibited. This applies to cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes containing burning tobacco, or any other substance, such as marijuana, that can be smoked in any other manner.
Anyone caught smoking on hospital property could face a fine under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act ranging from $300 to $300,000.
Hospital officials say becoming a smoke-free facility is an important step towards creating a healthier hospital environment.
