Local Jobless Rate Rises Again

For the second month in a row, the London-St. Thomas jobless rate has gone up.

Statistics Canada says the unemployment rate in March rose to 6.6%, up from 6.4% in February. The area shed 1,600 jobs and the labour force fell by 1,200, with 400 more people claiming unemployment.

It was a better picture nationally, as the jobless rate fell to 7.1% from 7.3% as the economy added 42,000 jobs. Most of the jobs were full-time and most were created in the private sector.

In Ontario, the unemployment rate was steady at 6.8%.
