Local Jobless Rate Climbs

A five-month streak of a falling unemployment rate came to an end in the London-area last month.

Statistics Canada says the jobless rate for London-St. Thomas was 6.4% in February, up from 5.8% in January. Figures released by the federal agency show the area lost 1,400 jobs while the labour force grew by 300.

Nationally, the unemployment rate saw a slight increase, from 7.2% to 7.3%. Gains in part-time work were offset by a loss of full-time jobs.

In Ontario, the jobless rate hit 6.8%.

Saskatchewan and New Brunswick saw two of the largest monthly net declines in jobs, while British Columbia was the only province to register a significant increase in employment.
