The risk of frostbite and hypothermia should be considered for anyone venturing outdoors Wednesday night.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit has issued the region's third Cold Weather Alert of the year as temperatures are forecast to fall below -15 C.
“In extreme cold like we’re expecting tonight, it can take as little as a few minutes for frostbite to take hold and damage exposed skin," says Randy Walker, Public Health Inspector with the Health Unit. "If you have to be outside tonight, plan ahead, dress in layers and be sure to wear a hat, gloves and a scarf.”
Fingers, toes, ears and nose are most susceptible to the cold. Skin effected by frostbite will turn red, blue or in later stages grey/white. Those suffering frostbite might also have pain, numbness and stiffness.
Overexposure to cold temperatures could also result in hypothermia, which occurs when a person’s body temperature drops below normal. Symptoms may include pale skin, lethargy, confusion and hallucinations. Individuals may shiver a lot in the early stages of hypothermia, but shivering may decrease as body temperature continues to drop.
The health unit recommends those suffering from frostbite or hypothermia seek emergency medical treatment.
Agencies that provide shelter and assistance to the homeless are being told to prepare for an increase in demand.
Donations of non-perishable foods, blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing can be dropped off at the following locations:

The cold weather alert is expected to end Thursday.
