Retired Anglican Priest Charged In Sex Assaults

A retired Anglican priest is facing accusations he sexually assaulted three boys beginning nearly 40 years ago.

London police announced the charges against David Norton on Friday. The 69-year-old was a Priest at St. Andrew's Anglican Church on the Chippewa of the Thames First Nation when the alleged sexual assaults occured. Police claim Norton began sexually abusing the boys in 1977 when they were seven. The abuse continued until 1983 when the boys turned 12.

It's alleged the abuse occurred in Norton's home in London.

He is now charged with three counts of indecent assault on a male and one count of sexual assault.

An official with the Anglican Diocese of Huron says Norton retired in 2011.

"We find it terribly hard. It is very sad when things like this happen," says Executive Archdeacon Tanya Phibbs. "Unfortunately it makes it difficult for folks to trust the church. We function well when people feel they can approach us, that we're a place of safety."

Phibbs says, once the Diocese learned of the charges, the Bishop removed Norton's ability to function as a priest until the case works its way through the courts.

"We have been in contact with the priest who is currently at the parish where David was when the incidents are alleged to have happened and have offered whatever support the she and the leaders of that parish feel is helpful for them at this time," says Phibbs.

Norton is to appear in court January 7.

Police are still investigating and are asking anyone with any information to call them at (519) 661-5670. Information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or at www.londoncrimestoppers.com.
