New Approach To Fall Food Drive

Those at the London Food Bank are taking a new approach to the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

This year's food drive starts on October 2 and runs through October 12.

As always, the food bank will be collecting non-perishable food items on site and at various grocery stores across the city.

As a new option, Londoners can make donations to purchase Harvest Bucks, which are distributed to those in need and can be redeemed at participating area farmers' markets for fresh produce.

"People can select the fresh vegetables and fruits they want themselves. It's also local, so it's a buy local and a share local idea ... It really helps them with the health of the food that they get," says Co-Executive Director of the London Food Bank Jane Roy.

If you are going to drop off produce at the food bank site, officials ask that they be root vegetables or things that will not spoil quickly.

In the first 9 months of 2015 there has been an 11.7% drop in food bank usage, but roughly 3,100 families still visit the site each month.
