A local church is beginning the sponsorship process to bring a Syrian refugee family to London.
Community fundraising has brought in $87,000 to date following a call to action on September 5.
Of that money is a single $28,000 donation from Metropolitan United Church. That money will be presented to Byron United Church to help bring the first family to London.
Lifeline Syria estimates it costs roughly $27,000 to support a refugee family of four for an entire year.
“This is amazing. Our community continues to do what is necessary to help refugee families in need,” says Mayor Matt Brown. “I am so pleased to see how Londoners from across our city are working together to answer this call to action.”
Since the call to action Mayor Brown has been working with other mayors to coordinate fundraising efforts through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Task Force of Refugee Resettlement. Later this week Brown will go to the Big City Mayors' Caucus in Toronto to discuss the issue further.
Donations to the fund can be made at all Libro Credit Union locations or at the sites listed below.
