ETFO Threatens Further Job Action

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is threatening to ramp up job action should the union and the province not reach a deal by the start of the school year.

ETFO says members will begin phase two of a "work to rule" campaign on the first day of school this September.

That means teachers will not participate in field trips or fundraising, collect money for school activities, respond to any electronic communication from principals, collect or distribute any paper work or attend meet the teacher nights.

The "work to rule" campaign began last May with strictly administrative cut backs and the refusal to participate in EQAO testing.

“We will stay the course to protect teacher professionalism and teachers’ ability to use professional judgment when providing instruction to students,” says ETFO President Sam Hammond. “While we have agreed to return to the bargaining table on September 1, there must be movement at the table towards a fair collective bargaining agreement that respects teacher working conditions and student learning conditions.”

The main sticking points in working out a new deal continue to be management rights and teachers' professional discretion, rather than money or benefits.

The two sides have been negotiating for nearly a year now.
