An overnight vandalism spree has brought the number of London Transit Commission bus shelters destroyed in the city to 34, and officials are still counting.
It is believed the vandals are using a pellet gun to shoot out panes of glass at bus shelters.
It all started on June 2, but has escalated in the last 24 hours. Three smashed bus shelters were discovered overnight and another 16 have been reported throughout the day.
"It's extremely frustrating, it's the cost of vandalism, but even more frustrating is the inconvenience it causes for our passengers. You look at the weather forecast and they are calling for a day of solid rain again tomorrow and we're going to have 34 shelters in the city without glass," says LTC General Manager Kelly Paleczny. "It's approximately $250 per pane of glass, and a lot of there's shelters there's more than one pane of glass that's been shattered."
Paleczny says there were several similar incidents in 2012, but the vandalism stopped when police became involved.
She says officers are aware of the situation and investigating.
