A student led sock drive has donated more than it expected to a local organization that helps the homeless.
The Brescia College chapter of the Canadian Association of Food Professionals collected socks to give to Unity Project.
The students were able to double their goal this year and gave more than 3,700 pairs of socks to the housing and support service.
"There is something particularly meaningful about socks because homeless people are on their feet a lot," says Silvia Langer, development director at Unity Project. "Homeless people's feet can be in very bad condition. So, a warm pair of socks is very healing. "
Some of the drive's success can be attributed to McGregor Socks. The company donated 1,500 pairs of socks to the cause.
Rachel Lipson's family owns McGregor Socks. She is also a student at Brescia College.
"We always say everybody needs socks. You'll never really find anyone who says they have enough socks, especially here," says Lipson. "It's something so small for us, if we can give that back in a big way then its all worth it."
In just three months, the students were able to collect 3,760 pairs of socks for Unity Project.
"Giving back has always been something my parents have instilled in me forever. So as soon as I saw a sock drive at Brescia, I said 'let's get on that'," says Lipson.
Unity Project offers emergency and transitional housing as well as support to homeless people in London.
They can distribute as many as 10,000 pairs of socks in a year.
