Man Charged With Defrauding Banks

A Brantford man is facing 15 fraud related charges after he allegedly defrauded five different banks.

Oxford OPP was called to the Bank of Montreal on Broadway St. in Tillsonburg around 10am yesterday morning.

Police say a man had come into the bank and tried to get a debit card for an account he had already opened there. The bank teller told the manager that the identification he provided was suspicious and police were called.

Through an investigation, police say the Bank of Montreal, Scotia Bank and CIBC in Tillsonburg were all defrauded between March 25 an April 7 of 2015. Other banks in Kitchener and Alymer were also targeted, losing over $1,700 in total.

Matthew Ouderkirk, 27, of Brantford faces seven charges of identity fraud, three charges of identity theft, two counts of fraud under $5,000 and three charges of obtaining credit by false pretences or fraud.

He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
