The OPP warns that if your online love seems too good to be true, there's a chance that it is.
With Valentines Day around the corner, police want the public to be aware of "romance scams"; a crime that cost Canadians over $13-million in 2014.
Many of these fraudsters will steal photos and use dating sites and social media to lure victims into sending money. They gain the trust of victims by forming false relationships over time and expressing desire to meet in person.
The OPP ask you be suspicious of any relationship online with a person you have never met, especially those living in other countries. Do not send money to someone you have never met or accept any payment, as it is likely fraudulent.
Anyone who feels they may be a victim of this type of fraud should call police or Crime Stoppers.
