Orchestra London Turns To Taxpayers

Orchestra London is asking the city for $375,000 to continue playing shows in 2015.

The organization is already granted $500,000 from the city each year.

Chair Joseph O'Neill has submitted a request for funding to the Strategic Priorities and Policy Committee. The committee will make a decision on Thursday afternoon.

Of the requested $375,000, $215,000 would be used for the wages, salaries and benefits of musicians and staff for the month of December 2014.

Officials say the orchestra was unable to secure a pledged donation of $350,000, leaving them unable to meet the needs of the payroll for December 9 and 23..

The board says it also owes the Canada Revenue Agency $110,000.

The remaining $50,000 would be used to pay for the voluntary bankruptcy of Orchestra London.  Officials say they have had a preliminary meeting with BDO and a $25,000 retainer is needed to for services.

As of June 30, 2014 Orchestra London was operating with a debt of $932,758.

This number is slated to increase, as the $350,000 pledge donation is factored in.
