Changes At Canada Games Aquatic Centre

The London Canada Games Aquatic Center has officially reopened following a $6.3-million overhaul.

The pool closed on June 1 for extensive renovations and all programs were moved to the outdoor pools in the city.

"We've changed all the pumps, they were 20 years old and a 20 year old pump is not as efficient as an old pump," says Manager of Parks and Recreation Bill Coxhead. "There's been improvements to the tower, and more importantly we've taken the flooring out throughout and done a lot of air handling system pieces to improve the air quality in the place. Older pools have poor air quality and we've done a lot to make that better."

It is expected the new systems will result in a 41% energy savings, translating to hundreds of thousands of dollars for the city.

Officials say upwards of 1,000 people use the facility each day for everything from diving lessons to synchronized swimming.

The federal Gas Tax Fund contributed $785,000 towards the project.
