Maroons make easy work of Caledon, Sarnia over weekend

The Chatham Maroons picked up two wins over the weekend, putting them at the top of the Greater Ontario Hockey League's (GOHL) western conference.

The first win came on Friday on the road against the Caledon Bombers. Viljami Kukkola made 28 saves to help the Maroons shut out the Bombers 6-0.

Opening the scoring in the first period was Aydan Doyle. His fifth goal of the season was assisted by Xandre Aitken.

Trevor Zanutto extended the Maroons' lead in the second period with his 19th goal. Getting the assists were Alexander Lisi and Aidan Edwards.

The third period is when the Maroons' offence came alive, scoring four goals on 19 shots.

Jaxon Priddle would get his 10th goal from Drew Ferenc and Brody Najim a couple of minutes before Bo Doxtator scored his third of the season. Getting the assists on Doxtator's goal were Zanutto and Ewan McChesney.

Carter Chadwick later added his 15th goal from Dylan Richter and Ian LaChance, before Boris Genov finished off the scoring with his second of the season.

The Maroons returned home on Sunday, where they defeated the winless Sarnia Legionnaires 3-1. Despite only getting three goals, the Maroons fired 59 shots on net.

Opening the scoring in the first period was the Maroons' Kaden Sienko. His fourth goal of the season was assisted by Priddle and Najim.

The Maroons scored twice in the second. The first was Zanutto's 20th goal, with the second being Edwards' sixth goal. McChesney and Priddle assisted on Zanutto's goal, while Aitken picked up the only helper on Edwards' goal.

The only goal given up by Blake Verberne came in the third period, as he made 23 saves for the win.

The two wins put the Maroons' record at 20-3-1-2, four points ahead of the Elmira Sugar Kings in the conference. Elmira does have three games in hand.

The Maroons' next game will be on Wednesday on the road against the LaSalle Vipers. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m.
