It didn't take Maple Leafs rookie Auston Matthews very long to set a new NHL record.
He scored four goals in his first game last night, becoming the first player in the history of the league to do that. Toronto still found a way to lose, falling 5-4 to Ottawa in overtime.
Wallaceburg's Seth Griffith, who was recently claimed off waivers by the Leafs, was a healthy scratch.
Elsewhere -- Chatham native TJ Brodie opened his season with an assist in the Calgary Flames 7-4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.
The St. Louis Blues beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 and the the LA Kings lost 2-1 to San Jose.
