After a scoreless first and second period, Michael Vieira scored on a powerplay in the third to give Essex the 1-0 lead.
But Joe DeSena scored with just 23 seconds to play for Mooretown to force overtime, where no one could find the back of the net.
Matt Badour made 27 saves for the 73's.
Essex is back in action on Friday when they head to Lakeshore.
