Sting Clinch Division With Authority

The Sarnia Sting clinched their first West Division title since 2004 with a 7-1 win over Guelph Tuesday night.

The Sting got on the scoreboard early with Matt Mistele scoring his 30th goal of the season just 2:43 into the contest. It’s the third time he’s reached the 30 goal plateau in his OHL career. The Sting would continue to press Michael Giugovaz but Guelph’s goalie held the fort in the first, stopping 13 of 14 first period shots.

Sarnia took control of the game in the second, out shooting Guelph 12-2, opening up a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes. Nikita Korostelev scoring twice and Pavel Zacha adding another for the visiting Sting.

Matt Mistele scored a pair in the final frame to complete the hat trick, while Jordan Kyrou also scored capping off the 7-1 victory. Both Kyrou and Mistele had four point nights.

The win clinches the West Division for Sarnia and guarantees them a second place finish in the Western Conference. It was also Sarnia's 40th victory of the season, one shy of the Sting record with three games remaining.

With the division locked up, look for the Sting to rest some players during the weekend, with three games in three nights.

Sarnia is in Kitchener Friday before travelling to Saginaw on Saturday. The Sting wrap up the regular season Sunday at home against the Windsor Spitfires, which is also the annual CHOK Radio Night.
