Wheatley Sharks In Key Matchup

The Wheatley Omstead Sharks host the Mooretown Flags tonight in Junior C hockey action.

The Sharks are enjoying a five game winning streak and head coach Dave Wiper says everything's working.

"We've been getting great leadership from our vets," said Wiper. "We've been getting awesome goaltending, and the kids are buying into the systems that we're trying to teach. It's really panning out for us right now."

The Sharks are coming off a wild 6-5 overtime victory at Alvinston Friday night, a game that was marred by an all-out brawl in the second period that resulted in a total of eight players receiving game misconducts, four of them from Wheatley.

Wiper says right now his players are finding ways to win and Friday's game was an example of that. He also says his top players are clicking at the right time.

"Our top six forwards have got to put the puck in the net and they're doing that right now," said Wiper.

Mooretown currently has 42 points and is in fifth place in the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League standings. Wheatley is sixth with 38 points. Wiper says tonight's game is key.

"Tonight's game is really big," said Wiper. "It's going to be a playoff-type game and we're excited to be in it."

This will be last home game for Wheatley in the regular season. The Sharks travel to Essex Tuesday night before finishing the season on the road Sunday at Amherstburg.
