Federal government invests in CK harbour repairs

Two harbours in Chatham-Kent (CK) are the beneficiaries of a federal funding increase to the Small Craft Harbours Program.

Rondeau (Erieau) Harbour and Wheatley Harbour will be able to use the investment to repair and upgrade infrastructure issues.

As part of the Spring Economic Update 2026, the Government of Canada has proposed $957.8 million for the program over five years, starting in 2026-27. The funding is in addition to Fisheries and Oceans Canada's existing annual program budget of approximately $90 million.

"Small craft harbours are the working backbone of coastal communities in Canada," said Minister of Fisheries Joanne Thompson. "This funding will keep harbours safe and operational across the country, so rural and coastal economies stay strong and resilient for the long haul."

London MP Arielle Kayabaga was in CK on Monday to announce the investment and highlight what would now be possible for Rondeau Harbour and Wheatley Harbour.

Rondeau Harbour, which is home to 25 commercial fishing vessels, will be able to rehabilitate Breakwater 303 and Basin 201.

Plans for Wheatley Harbour, home to 59 commercial fishing vessels, include encapsulating its East Pier in steel, constructing a new concrete deck, and dredging the Entrance Channel and Sediment Sink.

According to Ottawa, the repairs will be carried out using the latest climate projections to ensure climate resistant infrastructure that meets the needs of the commercial fishing industry and community.
