It wasn't just about Earth Day.
Glasshouse Nursery and Garden Centre recently gave away 1,000 trees in an effort to help preserve nature and help future generations.
"We're doing this to try to get people to understand the importance of a tree," said co-owner Dave Van Raay. "One tree can provide oxygen in the future."
It wasn't just seedlings that the nursery handed out, according to Van Raay the trees were 6 to 8 foot Maples and Serviceberries. The trees are native to the Chatham-Kent area and are easy to plant and grow.
They aren't in pots, but Van Raay said that as the trees are picked up he tries to make sure the new owners know how to take care of them.
"I describe to them how to plant a bare-root tree, so we can get as much success growing them as possible," he explained. "It's a little different than a potted tree that you'd buy at a garden centre, where you can just stick it in the ground."
When asked if he would consider another tree giveaway, Van Raay was hesitant, but positive. He called it busy and chaotic, but he believes planting trees is important.
"The best thing that you can do, is plant a tree," he stated.
