UPDATE: CK council approves revamp to former Chatham school

A vacant school in Chatham has been rezoned to allow more housing units to be built.

The rezoning for the former Victoria Park Public School at 215 Murray Street in Chatham, which was approved by council on Monday night, allows the building to be converted into a 31-unit apartment building.

"These units vary in size from approximately 430 square feet to 740 square feet, which is pretty common by today's standards," said Director of Planning Services Ryan Jacques.

He added that the units will be affordable market rental apartments.

"It's my understanding that the applicant intends to seek seniors as tenants, and it would be reasonable to assume that rents would be consistent with that demographic," Jacques continued.

The applicant also said the site has long-term potential to accommodate future medium density residential development.

The approved proposal includes the construction of a new three-storey, 10-unit building on vacant property at 178 William Street South in Chatham at Duluth Street.

The proposal is for six three-bedroom units, three two-bedroom units, and one studio apartment.

The application passed 17 to zero.
