Two women escape submerged vehicle near Erieau

Two women are lucky to be alive after accidentally driving a vehicle into Lake Erie.

At around 10 p.m. on Thursday, Chatham-Kent police were called to Mariners Road in Erieau for a submerged vehicle.

According to police, a 20-year-old woman and an 18-year-old woman were in the vehicle when the driver mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

Both were able to escape as the windshield broke as soon as the vehicle hit the water.

After spending about four minutes in the lake, the women found a ladder and climbed out. The two then reached a nearby house, where they were able to call for help.

The spot where the vehicle fell into the water is around seven metres deep.
