The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has been asked to reconsider its decision to close the Coatsworth bulk water station.
The water station is one of 12 in Chatham-Kent.
During a council meeting on Monday night, two deputations highlighted the importance of the water station, as well as a petition with over 200 signatures, leading councillors to motion for reconsideration of the station's closure.
The deputations focused on how underserved rural areas like Coatsworth are, as well as how closing the station will add monetary strain on people who will have to travel further for their water.
“Most rural areas already don't have street lights, garbage pick-up, municipal waters, sewers, or paved roads,” said one deputation.
Councillor Melissa Harrigan brought the motion to the table, and it was seconded by Councillor Lauren Anderson.
“Once this service is gone, we’re not getting it back,” said Harrigan. “Voting in favour of this motion is a vote in favour of rural infrastructure, rural residents, and rural agricultural operations.”
The motion, requesting the PUC to reconsider its decision to close the water station and keep it operational, was passed 15-3.
As of right now, the station is slated to permanently close in October.
The PUC will reconsider the closure before bringing it back before the council in a future meeting.
