A Chatham native is paying tribute to his recently departed mother with a solo ride around Chatham-Kent to honour her memory and raise money for the Alzheimer Society.
Shawn's mother, Patricia, passed away on August 21 at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, surrounded by her loved ones. She was 81.
Shawn VanGassen will be starting the 500-kilometre ride at Enbridge Gas at Keil Drive and Grand Avenue on Friday at 10 p.m. and plans on finishing on Saturday at approximately 7 p.m., following around 25 laps around his route to Prairie Siding and back.
While riding after his mom's funeral, VanGassen felt that he wanted to do some good before returning home in San Diego. He thought the best way to do it was to keep his mom's memory alive and give back at the same.
"Maybe I can involve the Alzheimer Society because that's who we chose at my mom's funeral to have donations made to," said VanGassen.
Shawn’s bike ride in memory of his mother stands as a powerful testament to this spirit of generosity and solidarity, said Joel Emery of the Alzheimer Society.
Emery said his decision to honour her legacy in such a meaningful way not only touches our hearts but also serves as a beautiful tribute to her life.
“Community support remains an essential lifeline for the Alzheimer Society of Chatham-Kent. The continued operation of our vital programs and services would not be possible without it. Over the years, we have been deeply moved by the many meaningful ways in which individuals and groups within our community have supported our organization -- acts that ultimately benefit their neighbours, friends, and loved ones," said Emery.
Emery concluded by noting the group is sincerely grateful for Shawn’s efforts and supports him as he raises awareness and helps reduce the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society anytime.
September is World Alzheimer's Month, an international campaign by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) to raise awareness and combat stigma surrounding Alzheimer's and other dementias. This month, organizations and individuals worldwide engage in awareness events and advocacy to provide education, reduce misconceptions, and encourage improved care and support for those affected.
