More mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus in Chatham-Kent.
On Tuesday, the local public health unit confirmed that mosquitoes collected from a trap in Dresden on September 3 were infected.
This is the first time this season West Nile has been found at this location.
Earlier this summer, mosquitoes in Ridgetown, Chatham, and Tilbury tested positive.
At this point, all West Nile cases in the municipality have been contained to the insects, with no human cases having been confirmed.
CK Public Health does sayn that most people infected with the virus won't experience symptoms. Some may experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and fatigue. In rare cases, infected individuals may experience more severe illness, including stiff neck, nausea, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, and paralysis.
The health unit advises the best way to protect yourself and your family is to:
• Wear light-coloured clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks
• Use insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin (follow the label directions)
• Stay indoors when mosquitoes are most active (dusk to dawn)
• Ensure that all door and window screens are tight and free of holes
• Eliminate sources of standing water on your property to prevent mosquitoes from breeding
