Lake St. Clair boating crash claims life of second teen

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say a 16-year-old girl injured in a boating accident last week has died.

Four girls were injured in the collision. One of them, a 17-year-old from Essex County, succumbed to her injuries shortly after the incident.

The OPP reported on Thursday that a 16-year-old from Calgary, who was airlifted to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, had also passed away.

Two other teenage girls were treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the incident took place at around 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, on Lake St. Clair near Couture Beach in Lakeshore, just west of Lighthouse Cove.

A witness told WindsorNewsToday.ca that he saw the vessel bearing down on the breakwall that separated the shoreline from homes. He and his family helped pull the victims from the water and call first responders.

The OPP has not released the names of the victims.

The investigation is ongoing.
