Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) has opened a new, dedicated Breastfeeding Room to support patients, families, visitors, and staff looking for a private, quiet space to breastfeed, pump, or care for their infants.
The room will be open 24/7 as of August 1, which is the start of World Breastfeeding Week.
"Supporting people in their breastfeeding journey is part of creating a more welcoming and equitable healthcare environment," said Jessica Johnston, Manager, Women & Children's Program at CKHA. "Whether you're a staff member returning to work or a parent visiting a loved one, we want you to feel supported."
Two glider chairs, a baby change table, and a side table were supplied for the space by the CKHA Foundation.
"The Foundation is proud to support projects like this that directly improve the care experience for patients, families, and staff," President and CEO of the CKHA Foundation Christine Mitchell shared. "The breastfeeding room is a thoughtful addition that reflects our shared commitment to comfort, dignity, and inclusion at CKHA."
According to CKHA, the project was inspired by a returning physician who, after her maternity leave, requested a suitable space for breastfeeding. When it was discovered that no dedicated room was available, CKHA staff decided to explore a long-term solution.
Access to the room is coordinated through the Women & Children's front desk, where staff will ensure appropriate use and support patient and visitor safety protocols. An "In Use" sign will be made available to maintain privacy.
