Abandoned building reduced to embers after fire on Walpole Island

An abandoned building on Walpole Island First Nation has been reduced to a smoldering heap of ashes and charred wood after an early morning fire.

The Walpole Island Fire Department said crews were called to the scene on Snye River Road early Wednesday morning and were able to confirm that an abandoned structure was fully involved in flames by the time they arrived.

The firefighters at the scene were able to secure the scene and started "defensive fire operations."

Some hydro wire was seen burning as a result of the fire and Hydro One was called in for that issue.

No injuries were reported and there is no word on a damage estimate.
