Chatham-Kent police are reminding the public that golf carts aren't permitted on area roads.
According to police, there has been an increase in the number of golf carts spotted on local roads since summer began. Whether it's a short trip to the store or a visit to a neighbour's house, police remind the public that golf carts are not legally allowed on public roads.
"Golf carts lack critical safety features such as proper lighting, turn signals, mirrors, seatbelts, and structural protection," said Acting Sergeant Lisa Rodgers, Chatham-Kent Police Traffic Management Unit. "Operating one on a roadway not only poses a danger to the operator and other motorists, but it is also a violation of provincial traffic laws."
Police warn that anyone found driving a golf cart on highways or roadways may face fines, charges, and possible vehicle impoundment.
There are nearby communities that do have by-laws in place allowing golf carts on roads, like Lighthouse Cove, but no such rules are in place in Chatham-Kent.
