Chatham-Kent police are investigating a collision involving a train that officers are describing as an "unimaginable tragedy."
CK police said emergency crews were called to the railway tracks near Keil Drive in Chatham at around 1:10 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a pedestrian being hit by a passing train.
When they arrived, first responders found a young child who had sustained critical injuries.
Police said despite life-saving efforts, the child was pronounced deceased at the scene.
CK police said the identity of the child will not be released out of respect for the privacy of the family. The child's age was not released to the media, either.
"Our hearts are broken for the family and loved ones affected by this unimaginable tragedy," said Sergeant Jason Herder of the Traffic Management Unit. "We ask the community to keep them in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time."
The incident is still under investigation and support services have been made available to the family and first responders.
