Local students wrap up successful "Community Kindness" campaign

Students from the Wallaceburg District Secondary School (WDSS) Leadership Course have wrapped up an initiative aimed at supporting other youth.

The "Community Kindness" campaign was focused on collecting essential hygiene products to help students in need. According to the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB), the Leadership students found that a lack of access to hygiene products was a growing issue in their school and decided to take action.

WDSS Vice Principal and course educator, Lisa Kameka, said that the students took total control of the project. They were in charge of everything, including the identifying the need, connecting with community partners, preparing and distributing collection boxes, promoting the campaign, collecting and organizing donations, and restocking the shelves.

From April 28 to May 16, marked donation boxes were placed at businesses and organizations throughout the community. Community members were invited to drop unused products such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products into the boxes.

LKDSB said that the community's generosity brought in a wide variety of items, which were used to restock the student pantry in the HUB at WDSS. The school board added that CF Industries and Noelle's Gift also support the HUB, helping to stock food and hygiene products year-round.

The HUB is described as a safe space that allows students to discreetly access whatever products they need.
