Breakthrough T1D Walk to take place in Chatham

A fundraising walk for Type 1 diabetes is coming to Chatham next month.

The Breakthrough T1D Walk will take place on Saturday, June 21 at Kingston Park.

"We are welcoming people to do a one or two-kilometre loop around Kingston Park, and there'll be a lot of fun activities," said organizer Mandy Smith-Grant. "Lunch is being provided by the Optimist Club food truck. We will have the kids zone sponsored by Lally Auto Group, and we're going to have a visit from Lefty, the Barnstormers mascot."

Registration opens at 11 a.m. and the ribbon-cutting will be at noon. The goal this year is to raise $21,000.

Smith-Grant added that people may know the event at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes.

"We went through a rebranding last fall because not just juveniles can get diabetes, adults can get type 1 diabetes as well. It's a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells, and while people can have insulin to treat their diabetes, it's not a cure," said Smith-Grant.

The walk isn't Breakthrough T1D's only fundraising event in Chatham-Kent next month.

"On June 8th, Boston Pizza is hosting a charity day where 10 per cent of sales will be donated to our event," said Smith-Grant. "As well, the Barnstormers are hosting us on June 14th, where we'll be the recipients of the 50/50 draw."
