Measles cases continue to rise in CK

Chatham-Kent Public Health has confirmed 10 more measles cases between May 13 and May 20, bringing the municipality's total up to 165 cases since the outbreak began last fall.

Those numbers are expected to rise, as the health unit has reported two new exposure sites over the last week.

The potential exposures were both in Chatham. The first took place on May 16, between 2:55 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Chatham Chrysler (351 Richmond Street). The second exposure happened between 4:15 p.m. and 8 p.m. on May 19 in the back hallway behind the Emergency Department at the Chatham hospital.

If you were present at either location at those times and aren't up-to date with your vaccinations, contact CK Public Health at 519-352-7270 ext. 5902.

Symptoms of the measles can take several days to appear and can include a fever, runny nose, cough, drowsiness, irritability, and red eyes. A red rash appears on the face 3 to 7 days after the initial symptoms start. The rash may start from the face and progress down the body.

Province-wide, 173 more cases were reported over the last week, bringing Ontario's total up to 1,795 since October 2024.

Throughout the months-long outbreak, 129 people have been hospitalized, 10 of whom required intensive care.

Public Health Ontario's weekly measles report said that the virus continues to spread primarily among people who have not been vaccinated.
