CK brewer named finalist for Canadian 'Brewer of the Year' award

A Chatham-Kent brewer has a chance to win a national award.

Stephen Goodal, the head brewer for Red Barn Brewing Company, has been named a finalist for the 'Brewer of the Year' award with the Canadian Brewers Choice Awards.

He's been with Red Barn for nearly five years, being named the head brewer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Goodal told CK News Today he and the brewery found out he had been nominated in a funny way.

"It was the owner of the brewery who got a couple of calls, as the publication (from the Canadian Brewers Choice Awards) had gone out. He gave me a call and told me," he said.

One of those who nominated Goodal for the award was Denny Vervaet, Co-Founder of Red Barn. In a press release, he explained he's very deserving of this accomplishment.

"This recognition is a reflection not only of Stephen’s skill and innovation but also of the passion he brings to every batch he brews. His vision has helped shape our identity, and we’re beyond proud to see his work celebrated on a national level," he added.

Goodal jokingly said Vervaet might have been more excited than him.

"I kind of shrunk into a hole, as I'm not a competitive person. I'm not someone who nominates themselves, so I was taken aback. I'm just about making beer," Goodal explained.

The award ceremony will take place in Ottawa on May 21, 2025.
