Chatham man arrested for shoplifting

A 38-year-old Chatham man is facing a handful of charges after he allegedly tried to get a five-finger discount at a store in Wallaceburg.

Chatham-Kent police said they were called to the retail business on Warwick Drive at around 8:45 a.m. Thursday for a report of a theft.

Police said the suspect was seen trying to leave the store without paying for several concealed items, but then dropped the items and took off when employees approached him.

Officers said they found the man nearby and arrested him.

Police were able to confirm the man as the accused in the case by reviewing surveillance footage and by collecting statements from witnesses.

Investigators said they also learned that the man had previously been released with a probation order and had an outstanding warrant for a similar offence.

He was charged with theft, possession of property obtained by crime, and failing to comply with his probation.

The accused was taken into custody and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.
