More Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras could be installed across Chatham-Kent.
Councillor Melissa Harrigan has brought forward a motion asking the municipality's administration to bring back a report about the costs of setting up more cameras in public spaces.
Currently, there are 171 cameras set up across the municipality.
Harrigan told CK News Today she believes this will be a big help for CK police.
"The CCTV cameras seem to be a real effective way to deter some of the vandalism and petty crimes," she said.
In fact, CCTV cameras recently helped police in two investigations. This included an assault in Chatham in which video surveillance helped police identify a suspect's vehicle and licence plate.
"We want to make sure that people who are committing these crimes are held accountable," added Harrigan.
She explained she's also had talks with CK Police Chief Kirk Earley about these cameras. Harrigan also noted there would be time to hear from the police before any actual spending is done, since her motion only asks for a report.
This motion will be discussed at CK council's next meeting on April 28, 2025.
