Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to cause flooding along the Thames River this week.
The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a flood outlook for Chatham-Kent ahead of the wet weather.
Environment Canada is calling for 30 to 50 mm of rain beginning on Wednesday and lasting into Thursday. A rainfall warning from the national weather agency advised that some areas could see even more precipitation.
"With thunderstorms expected, rainfall amounts may exceed 50 mm over some areas, particularly over southwestern Ontario," the statement said. "Rainfall warnings may be required for some areas as the event draws nearer."
The LTVCA warned that even the lower amounts of rain in the forecast could cause ponding, standing water, and localized flooding.
The Thames River and smaller waterways in CK are expected to rise and spill over into low-lying areas, including the river flats from Delaware down to Chatham and the sidewalk along the river in downtown Chatham.
The LTVCA said it does expect to operate the McGregor Creek Diversion Channel over the next few days. In order to protect the south end of the city of Chatham from flooding on McGregor Creek.
Residents are advised to take extra care around the river, ditches, and streams as the combination of slippery banks and fast-moving cold water can be dangerous.
