Man wanted for abducting woman in Mississauga turns up in Chatham-Kent

A 48-year-old Kitchener man who was wanted by police in Mississauga is also facing charges in Chatham-Kent after officers chased him down in Chatham.

Peel Regional Police said their investigation started at around 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday when officers received a report of a man who had hit a woman before he forced her into a vehicle in Mississauga and then took off.

Chatham-Kent police said they got involved in the case after they received information from Peel Regional Police about a possible abduction.

CK police said they were able to track the suspect's vehicle down on St. Clair Street Wednesday afternoon after learning that the suspect was believed to be in the north end of Chatham.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver took off "southbound on St. Clair Street at a high rate of speed," according to police, who also noted that the driver was disregarding traffic signals.

Police said the vehicle was later involved in a crash at the intersection of Grand Avenue West and St. Clair Street, but continued west on Grand Ave. until it stopped because of mechanical problems.

Officers said the driver then took off on foot and tried to escape, but police were able to find him hiding on private property.

The suspect was arrested and taken to CK police headquarters. He was charged with flight from a police officer, dangerous driving, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident and was set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Peel Regional Police identified the man as and said he is also charged with assault and forcible confinement.

They said the woman who was seen being forced into the vehicle has also been located and is in good health.

Police are still asking anyone with information on the incident to contact Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting peelcrimestoppers.ca.
